Rename Harry A. Burke High School

The Issue

It is well time for a name change of Omaha Burke High school. The school is named after Harry A. Burke the Omaha Public Schools superintendent from the year 1946 to 1962. In a recent article about the topic it is said that Burke “proclaimed that as long as he was superintendent, there would not be a black educator in the school system, other than the two schools that served the black community,” (https://bhspress.com/1454/opinion/forgotten-history-is-it-time-for-a-name-change this is a highly disheartening and terrible thing that was said especially when the ops school district prides itself on being diverse and welcoming to all. So, to have a school with a high black and Latino population named after a man that believed “in not having any black teachers and was opposed to any situation “where white children would see a black person in a role of prominence or authority.” It is high time for a change. We are not representing our students, our staff and our families in a manner that is welcoming to all and encouraging to the black community in Omaha and everywhere. Please take the time to sign this petition to have Burke High School renamed to no longer uphold the systemic racism and to bring a positive change to the school so all people no matter what race feel valued, feel welcomed, and most importantly feel safe.
