OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY - ANTIPOLO CAMPUS: REQUEST FOR A RECOVERY WEEK

The Issue

As a consequence of the effect of the Typhoon Ulysses on the schooling area, Students across Our Lady of Fatima University - Antipolo Campus demand for a RECOVERY WEEK for the victims of the said typhoon. Fatimanians across different departments raised various concerns and complaints on the current condition of our instructive framework that was bothered by the progressive tropical storms that have attacked the Philippines in the previous weeks. The ongoing catastrophes have represented a grave danger not exclusively to the security and prosperity of the students, yet additionally to the foundations that are an imperative to the students' admittance to schooling and the instructors' and overseers' capacity to satisfy their obligations. Serious harm was managed on homes, gracefully of power, and organization associations, which results to significant challenges with regards to the E-learning industry.

The students are indeed aware that a 4 day "health break" was already implemented by the school last November 12, 2020 up to November 15, 2020 and we are immensely thankful for that. However, in light of the recent events such as the onslaught of Typhoon Ulysses and other calamities that have occurred in different parts of the country, the academic break that has been given to us didn't serve its genuine purpose as those were the consecutive days that the typhoon hit the country. Furthermore, most of us haven't fully recovered and some are still at risk. Some areas around Antipolo and most specifically Marikina which was severely affected by the typhoon are still experiencing power outage and loss of stable internet connection. Many students coming from different strands and departments and to the extent: the teachers and staffs, have been currently struggling to participate in any affiliated school activities — both synchronous and asynchronous. That's why the students have deemed it important that a recovery week be implemented as many are still on the process of recovering due to the numerous calamities that took place earlier this week.We believe that decent quality of education also encompasses students' welfare. In solidarity with these students, we support the notion that "No Student Shall Be Left Behind."

Because of the public government's powerlessness to address the requirements of the Filipino individuals taking into account the ongoing catastrophes, the essential basic freedom to instruction is brutally undermined and stays helpless against remarkable calamities. With this, the Fatimanians intensely requests that SHS & college students, teachers, and school representatives be managed the cost of their entitlement to recuperate in the midst of these staggering emergencies through a framework wide scholastic break. This requires a one (1) week suspension of both coordinated and no concurrent classes with no evaluated necessities and the delay of school related works. Herewith, teachers and school workers must not be denied of their compensations and wages in the midst of the proposed scholarly break.

We call on the national government to be proactive and act now in response to the calls of the students. Students are the foundation of the school and we hope the administration considers the welfare of its students and prioritize it at all times. The current statute, where classes are to be continued immediately after a calamity, is ignorant of the material and objective conditions that the students face. We firmly believe that our national solidarity must be at its strongest now more than ever, as state negligence continues to endanger our families, friends, students, and countrymen. To continue synchronous & asynchronous classes while the current state of our nation is in immediate and continuous crisis is a shame. Millions of students are left behind due to the tragedy that resulted from both the super typhoon and the government’s neglect.

Thus, we call on both the Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education to implement a No Fail Policy nationwide, in order to alleviate the burden of the students and to give a more humane policy. Moreover, we urge the national government to immediately implement mass testing nationwide, which has been put off by the administration amidst the uncountable calls of the people. We echo this call once again to highlight the importance of building a response oriented towards the health sector, instead of militarizing the existing pandemic response of the government.

The issues that struck have indeed left our people handicapped. Majority were left without any homes, food and, clothes. Thus, we call for an immediate, comprehensive, and properly funded response from the national government to the victims of Typhoon Ulysses.

The country has been in the abandoned hands of the national government long enough, thus we thoroughly recognize the agitation of students.
