We are SADIE (Student Association for Diversity, Inclusion, and Education), an organization created by students and alumni from the Olentangy Local School District. Following the events of this past summer, and the continued lack of change with how the district handles discrimination against minorities and fails to promote diversity and inclusion, we created a list of initiatives to encourage change amongst the district. As a group, we are very passionate about making OLSD a place that is a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students. 

One of our main focuses at the moment is Initiative IX (Acknowledging the Appropriation of Native American Culture) and the removal of the racist Native American imagery of the mascots within OLSD. We are aware that the district is considering removing the racist imagery of the mascots within Olentangy, but are not planning on changing the names of the high school mascots. As a step in this process, we were informed that the district voted against changing the name of the mascot for Olentangy High School. Indigenous people have addressed their concerns and for OLSD to support one stereotype, it teaches students that all stereotypes are acceptable.

It is critical that we listen to Indigenous voices calling for OLSD to change its hurtful and insensitive rhetoric. Changing the name "Braves" is an important step in ensuring that the district is respectful and inclusive of all cultures.
