Help us to Save Schamback Westport Park Trees-Westport KY (Oldham County KY)
The Issue
Many people in Oldham County, KY and surrounding areas travel to Schamback Park ( Formerly Westport Park) in Westport (Oldham County) to launch their boats, take a motorcycle ride down to the river, or simply enjoy sitting by the water's edge taking in the view. Part of the ambiance of the area are the large, mature trees that provide shade near the water on a hot summer day. These trees have been intact for multiple generations and are not obstructing or putting anyone in danger visiting the park.
Recently at the January 19th meeting of the Parks and Recreation Committee at the Oldham County Fiscal Court, Oldham County Judge Executive David Voegele stated that he does not like the appearance of the trees, and he is ordering that they be removed this spring, without a plan of action for this change- We are asking the judge Executive David Voegele and the Magistrates of Oldham County to reconsider their vote for the total removal of the trees located on the Ohio River Edge until there is a project, a cost , a budget approved and time line for execution .The trees are to be cut down at the end of March and the unsightly stumps will be left there. Many of these trees are very large and healthy, and have been alive for fifty years or more.
Trees belong in our parks, but unfortunately the days of enjoying the beauty of these trees may be numbered. If you value having some shade near the riverbank, and admire the natural beauty of these large, mature trees or if you are simply a person who appreciates the value of trees in general you are urged to take action. Let the Oldham County Judge Executive and Magistrates know your opinion.
Please take a quick moment sign the petition and help to save the trees. Once they are gone, they are gone forever.
