The Issue

What happens in Vegas should stay in Vegas and not travel to Times Square according to many seniors who live in Times Square.

When people think of Times Square, they envision bright lights and Broadway Theaters. They don't immediately imagine that people live in Times Square, especially older adults who use walkers and other assistive devices to get around. While we want Times Square to prosper, a casino is not the best catalyst for this growth.

Seniors who live in the 290-unit Woodstock Hotel reside a stone's throw from the proposed casino location. Residents of this site operated by the nonprofit Project FIND, have started a group called SACC, Seniors Advocating to Curtail a Casino in Times Square, which is dedicated to preserving the unique character of Times Square for all generations. Some of the group members have lived in Times Square for more than 20-years. Many identify as Black, Brown and low-income. They have seen a grand transformation of Times Square from the seedy elements of the 70's and 80's that they don't wish to return toward. The group works to educate the public and policymakers about the potential negative impacts of a casino, advocating for responsible development that respects the existing community and its values.

While the casino developers have glossy billboards touting a positive "Halo" effect of the proposed casino on the Times Square area, grassroots SACC members believe the proposed casino by Roc Nation, SL Green, and Caesars Palace on 43rd Street would expand crime, congestion, and disruption to their normal way of life in the community they call home. The Woodstock Hotel, in particular, is a place that hundreds of NYC seniors rely on for a peaceful environment for their daily activities and respite. The influx of visitors attracted by a casino would make it difficult for them to navigate safely.

Project FIND and SACC are members of the NO Times Square Casino Coalition. A recent poll conducted Tulchin Research surveyed 400 registered voters, and 71% said they are against the idea. Only 9% of those polled said Times Square is the best location in New York City for a casino, while 80% said they’re concerned a casino would attract more crime.

SACC members believe there are better ways to enhance the neighborhood without compromising its integrity or safety. More housing options or community spaces could provide long-term benefits without the negative impacts associated with a casino.
