Old Redford Does Not Want Another Liquor Store

The Issue

Residents and business owners demand an alternative to the former City Liquor Shoppe/Piper Liquor reopening at 21756 Grand River Ave. in Detroit, MI.

As a business owner, member of The Old Redford Business Association, resident in the impact area, visitor and/or patron of the business corridor, I am signing this petition to express deep concern for the safety and viability of the Old Redford community should the owners of the building located at 21756 Grand River Ave. be allowed to reopen the business as liquor store.

For more than 30 years, the Old Redford neighborhood, home to nearly 1,200 families, was adversely impacted by the criminal activity that dominated the corner of Grand River Ave. and Lahser. Community members and visitors reported incidents of illegal drug sales inside and outside the store, illicit drug use in nearby allies and parked cars, loitering, loud music, public intoxication, and other criminal activities and nuisances. The neighborhood is home to K-8 schools. As a result, children were exposed to these occurrences almost daily.

In February 2023 the store closed.

My signature below is intended to urge decision-makers to consider the impact of allowing this careless and irresponsible neighboring business to re-open in our commercially thriving and family-oriented neighborhood. The 48219 zip code has more than 52 liquors stores and dispensaries. We, who sign below, ask the City of Detroit and other governmental stakeholders to work with the building owner(s) to explore alternative uses that align with our community's goals and values.

*Residents in the following neighborhoods live in the impacted area: Old Redford, Malvern Hill, Holcomb Community, Oak Grove, Riverdale, and Miller Grove.

**Parents, students, teachers, administrators, and volunteers associated with Old Redford Academy - Elementary School and Detroit Service Learning Academy are within the impacted area.

***This is a public petition and all are welcome to sign!
