Change the 90-minute class schedule
The Issue
The full days of 90 minute online classes are extremely stressful for the student population and teachers. It would be in the Olathe School District's best interests to find an alternative to the 90-minute block scheduling.
With everything that is happening today, students already have a lot on their plate. According to a survey by Core Spaces, a survey of 2,500 students, 75% reported feeling more anxious or stressed, 57% said they lost their summer jobs, and 90% want to return to campus in the fall. 75% of students reported feeling more anxious or stressed due to online learning. Students are more stressed than ever and online learning ist helping.
Teachers finds it more stressful to hold 90-minute classes because lessons were built on the old schedule that have been in place for years, so much of the material is meant to be covered in 45 min classes. In most cases, the remaining 45 minutes is spent either wasting time or used as a work period. No extra material is discussed, and most students do not ask for help, so the teacher's presence is not required.
An alternative to the 90 minute block days is continuing the 45 minute hybrid days we have been doing. Students would not have to reschedule work/other activities and would be less stressed and more productive.
