Make Our Classes Eligible For PASS/FAIL
The Issue
We are calling for Ohio Wesleyan University to make classes eligible for a Pass/Fail system for the Fall 2020 semester.
In the wake of monumental tragedy, witnessing countless deaths both through virtue of two pandemics; COVID-19 and the ongoing Racism in America, students were expected to come back to campus this fall and quickly and seamlessly adapt to an environment that was not only completely foreign but also fear and anxiety inducing.
The impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on students is immeasurable when it comes to how it has affected the mental and physical health of students on campus. Having to constantly transition from in-person to hybrid to sometimes completely remote learning takes a toll on a student's experience and ability to perform well in school. As we are now going on the ninth month of a pandemic Ohio Wesleyan should be taking action to support its students in every way possible. That is why today we are calling for Ohio Wesleyan to make the Pass/Fail system be set in place for this Fall semester.
Additionally, as the University opted out of key programs like the textbook assistance program that aids and support students in their academic endeavours. There are many students who don’t have the resources or access to the resources necessary to successfully carry out their classes. Not to mention the enormous duress students, namely students of color, have experienced through national messaging, and the presidential election. The inability to focus and emotionally allocate time to classes has been incredibly dimminshed by the stressful nature of our current situation. We ask that the University do its part in supporting its students by adopting this equitable solution that will acknowledge their struggle while aiding them in their academic careers.
Many Universities are adopting similar grading systems to support students through this time including:
Ohio University, Ohio State University, Case Western Reserve, Oberlin College, Cleveland State University, Bowling Green State University, MIT, Smith College, Barnard College, Columbia University, Georgetown University, The University of Florida, The University of Miami, among many others.
In general, this pandemic has had an overall negative effect on the esteem and mental health of our campus. For the reasons listed above, we ask that Ohio Wesleyan University gives us the option to transition from letter grade to pass/fail.
