Zack Ford started this petition to Office of the Onondaga County Comproller

An important part of bringing our country together, is to not tolerate elected officials who make racist and unethical comments.

In a wide-ranging social media conversation I had with Onondaga County Comptroller Martin Masterpole, whose office is in Syracuse, NY, Mr. Masterpole made a litany of comments that I would characterize as racist and unethical.

I have a screenshot record of this conversation, which took place on October 30 and October 31, 2020.

When I asked Mr. Masterpole if he thought candidates should speak out against open displays of racism by local elected officials, Mr. Masterpole said, “I disagree”.

When I cited Skaneateles, NY, mayor Martin Hubbard this summer being filmed while breaking Village Code as he ripped down Black Lives Matter fliers while yelling at a private citizen that she was “illegal”, Mr. Masterpole didn't change his opinion.

Mr. Masterpole bemoaned why “marches weren’t enough”, and belittled systematic racism when he asked whether we should “hold daily press briefings about it”, and stated, “Not saying a word doesn’t make you a [sic] racists”.

Silence is complicity.

Mr. Masterpole and I also discussed the systematic pollution of Skaneateles Lake, which used to be the second-cleanest body of water in the United States, but now on certain days has enough blooming cyanobacteria in it (HABs) to kill a dog.

When I told Mr. Masterpole that current Skaneateles mayor Martin Hubbard had broken environmental law and further polluted our water, as cited by the DEC in a Notice of Violation in 2017, Masterpole responded, “I honestly could care less about what laws were broken, I’ve broken laws before and while in office.”

Ironically, Skaneateles Lake provides the drinking water for the majority of Mr. Masterpole’s constituents.

Elected officials who condone racism, who have little regard for the destruction of our environment, and who boast about breaking laws while in office, are not fit for office.

When Mr. Masterpole willfully ignores acts of racism committed by his peers, and when he refuses to take a stand against racism, he is thereby aiding and abetting the systemic racism in our government.

Our leaders must lead by example, and they must take a firm and unified stand against hatred and bigotry. Mr. Masterpole's failure to champion the dignity and humanity of his own constituents is frankly embarrassing, and it is a slap in the face to the very people who voted for him.

Mr. Masterpole should resign.
