The recent appointment of Toby Young to the newly-founded Office for Students (OfS) is a blow to the idea of robust regulation and accountability in the Higher Education sector. Young's previous comments, coupled with his lack of experience, demonstrate that his appointment is wildly inappropriate.
His "teaching experience" was a graduate teaching assistant post at Cambridge in the 1990s, while he has openly called working class students "stains" as well as “universally unattractive” and “small, vaguely deformed undergraduates” in his book The History Myth.
In response to inclusivity in education, Young has said “it’s one of those ghastly, politically correct words that has survived the demise of New Labour. Schools have got to be ‘inclusive’ these days" criticizing “wheelchair ramps, the complete works of Alice Walker in the school library (though no Mark Twain) and a Special Educational Needs Department that can cope with everything from Dyslexia to Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy.”
Young's bigoted comments about disabled and working-class students are completely unacceptable and display utter contempt. He has demonstrated a lack of credibility to oversee the needs of staff and students alike and his appointment should be recalled, or he should resign.
