Offer district-wide online/hybrid schedules for all students

The Issue

As a 15-year-old living in the Chicago area, I've constantly struggled to keep up with a "normal" school schedule. This isn't because I'm "lazy" or uninterested in my education. Far from it—I sincerely believe in the importance of education for every child. However, I face a uniquely challenging set of circumstances. My life is exceptionally stressful with numerous responsibilities, and I also grapple with severe anxiety, which often makes attending school in person quite difficult.

Statistically, I'm not alone. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 31.9% of U.S. adolescents experience any anxiety disorder at some point in their lives, with many students reporting that in-person attendance exacerbates their symptoms. Furthermore, a study by the CDC in 2021 reported that approximately 1 in 6 children aged 2–8 years had a diagnosed mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder, underscoring a broader mental health challenge among students that in-person schooling doesn't always accommodate.

Chicago Public Schools has the opportunity to address this issue head-on by implementing a district-wide online or hybrid scheduling option for students. Such a program would not only accommodate students who, like me, struggle with mental health issues, but also benefit others with demanding extracurricular commitments, part-time jobs, or family obligations. Hybrid and online models have already shown success across the country, increasing student engagement and success rates in regions where implemented.

Additionally, online and hybrid schedules can help the school district manage resources more efficiently, reducing overcrowding and potentially reallocating funding towards technological improvements and supportive services for students. For families, these flexible options can alleviate the stress of arranging childcare and transportation.

In our rapidly changing world, we must adapt our educational systems to meet the diverse needs of all students, ensuring inclusive learning environments. By signing this petition, you support the push for a modern, adaptable, and inclusive educational framework within the Chicago Public Schools system that recognizes and respects the varied circumstances of its student body.

Please sign this petition to urge Chicago Public Schools to offer district-wide online and hybrid schedules for students, helping us pave the way for a more inclusive and accessible future in education for every Chicago student. Your signature can make a monumental difference in the lives of students like me, offering us the flexibility and support we need to thrive.

Any type of support would be AMAZING, rather that be - signing the petition, donations to get more people to see the petition, or even something as simple as sharing this petition with just FIVE friends would help.

Most importantly, Thank You all (who do sign/donate/share) for trying to better the educational system for so many children, WE appreciate you all.
