Offer broader genetic testing to all pregnant women from 12 weeks
The Issue
When my son was 16 months old, he was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called Leigh's disease. This diagnosis came after countless visits to specialists who assured us nothing was wrong, despite our growing concerns. Had genetic testing been available and conducted earlier, he might have received the right treatment and support sooner, potentially improving his quality of life. This may not have changed the outcome, but it could have provided us with crucial time to adjust, prepare, and secure the necessary medical care from the beginning.
Currently, NHS England doesn't provide comprehensive genetic testing for all pregnant women from 12 weeks. This gap in prenatal care means that many parents face the same uncertainty and frustration that my family did, delaying critical diagnoses and interventions.
Genetic testing has advanced significantly and can now offer invaluable insights into the health of unborn children. Early detection of genetic conditions not only helps in preparing parents but also aids in timely medical interventions, potentially altering the course of a child's health and future.
Statistics show that around 1 in 25 children in the UK are affected by a genetic disorder. Offering broader access to genetic testing from 12 weeks can reduce the emotional and financial strain on families and healthcare systems alike by enabling anticipatory care and targeted treatments.
We urge NHS England to re-evaluate its current policies regarding prenatal genetic testing. By providing comprehensive tests to all pregnant women from 12 weeks, we can ensure early diagnosis and intervention for various genetic conditions. This proactive step will not only save lives but also improve the quality of life for countless children and their families.
Please sign this petition to call on NHS England to expand prenatal care and provide broader genetic testing options. Together, we can push for changes that will make a significant difference in the lives of future generations.
