Oconee County Homecoming and Prom Policy: 2026-27
Oconee County Homecoming and Prom Policy: 2026-27
The Issue
Oconee County Schools has recently revised its Homecoming and Prom guest policy. Under the previous policy, guests were permitted to attend if they were under the age of 21 and were either currently enrolled in high school or had graduated. The new policy now restricts guests to only those who are currently enrolled in high school and under the age of 21.
This change raises an important question: Why should a recent graduate someone who attended Oconee County High School only months ago, built lasting friendships, and maintained meaningful relationships with students who are still enrolled be prohibited from attending these events as a guest?
The previous policy already included procedures to ensure student safety and accountability. Guest attendees were required to complete an approval form, provide valid identification, and submit any additional documentation requested by the school. These measures allowed the school to verify guests while maintaining a fun and safe environment.
If there have been no documented issues under the previous policy, it is difficult to understand the need for a more restrictive rule. The new policy excludes recent graduates who remain a valued part of the school community without clear evidence of an existing problem. A policy should be supporting its students, not limiting for those who simply wish to share these milestone events with friends they have known throughout high school.
