Objection to Stage 4 of the North Brisbane Bruce Highway Western Alternative

Objection to Stage 4 of the North Brisbane Bruce Highway Western Alternative

The issue

To: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

The petition of residents of Moodlu and Elimbah, in the State of Queensland and electors of the Division of Pumicestone and Glasshouse draws to the attention of the House our objection to Stage 4 of the North Brisbane Bruce Highway Western Alternative in its entirety, - as proposed by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) - due to the significant impact on the environment, the community and the biodiversity of both Moodlu and Elimbah.

TMR offer zero route options for Moodlu. The intended route for this first leg of Stage 4. This project will destroy the natural habitat of platypus* (protected species) in Lagoon Creek amongst many others of this rich and diverse ecology and micro-climate, impacting a number of agricultural and residential properties being the homes and registered businesses of numerous residents of Moodlu, negatively affecting the local economy.

Stage 4 includes two route options for Elimbah. Neither option appears to have factored in the safely of primary school children, given the proximity to Elimbah State School. Both options proposed will have significant impacts on the town of Elimbah, surrounding agriculture, residences and registered businesses. Along with impact on fauna & wildlife corridors around Six Mile Creek between Round Mountain and Mt Elimbah

Your petitioners therefore request the House to do all in its power to ensure that:

a)    All planning for Stage 4 of the North Brisbane Bruce Highway Western Alternative is immediately halted and the following undertaken:

                      i.        Alternatives, such as upgrading existing highways and public transport services are properly investigated and considered with findings made available to the community without reservation or redaction.

ii.        Thorough study of the existing ecologies is to be completed for any proposed routes followed by environmental impact studies, with all findings made available to the community without reservation or redaction.

iii.        Honest and transparent consultation with residents and community groups in the affected zones is undertaken with all studies, maps and documentation available to the community without reservation or redaction.
