We are a group of long term locals of Wapping Lane. 

Wapping offers a sense of history and community to the diverse inhabitants of our area. A 4 and 5 storey apartment block is being planned for Chandler Street E1W amidst the low-rise surrounding buildings and residences.

Some residents of the flats  above the Wapping Lane Health Centre, adjacent to the proposed housing site on Chandler Street, have lived there for up to 45 years. The residents, of varying ages,  have long valued the light , the view, the fresh air and privacy afforded to them at this location. There are also a number of retirees whose quality of life is guaranteed by these assets.

The construction of a social housing complex on Chandler Street will block the natural light and erase the view so necessary for mental and community health and well being. This project, while beneficial for addressing housing shortages, overlooks the needs and welfare of existing residents who have invested their lives in this community.

Furthermore, the planned development will surely lead to increased congestion, noise, and pollution in the area, thus deteriorating our living conditions and security.  Studies show that increased urban density can significantly affect local infrastructure, leading to traffic issues and impinging on community safety.

While acknowledging the necessity for more social housing, it is crucial to find a balanced approach where new development does not compromise the quality of life for existing residents. Alternatives such as refurbishing existing vacant properties or exploring other locations within the borough that do not negatively impact current inhabitants should be considered. Thus far we, the residents, have had no communication of such considerations, nor have we been consulted or informed of the details involved in the planning. We certainly deserve to have a say in the changes to what is an intimate and community area. And such respect is usually considered standard.

Please join this petition urging local authorities, including the Tower Hamlets Council and the developers, to reconsider the Chandler Street development and demand responsible urban planning in Wapping. Let's work together to find a sustainable solution that respects both the need for affordable housing and the rights of long-standing community members to quality of life.
