Object to Bill C-36 HPOA
The Issue
Bill C-36, known as the Health Professions Objectivity Act (HPOA), is currently under consideration, and it stands to significantly impact healthcare professionals across the country. This legislation aims to impose harsh restrictions and punitive measures on healthcare providers who engage in patient advocacy, effectively stifacing their ability to speak up for the rights and needs of their patients.
As a dedicated healthcare professional, my primary commitment is to my patients. I chose this profession out of a genuine desire to make a difference in people’s lives by providing the best possible care and advocating for their health and well-being. Bill C-36 threatens to undermine this commitment by introducing measures that would penalize healthcare professionals for standing up for their patients.
The healthcare system relies on the voices of healthcare providers who are on the front lines, directly witnessing the challenges and needs of patients. By silencing these voices, Bill C-36 risks creating an environment where patient care is compromised because concerns cannot be adequately addressed.
Statistics show that patient advocacy leads to better health outcomes, as healthcare professionals can bring attention to necessary changes and improvements within the system. Studies have indicated that when healthcare providers are empowered to speak on behalf of their patients, patient satisfaction and overall health metrics improve.
Passing Bill C-36 could lead to a decline in the quality of care patients receive, as healthcare providers may feel restricted in raising critical issues or highlighting patient needs due to fear of repercussions. This is not just an issue for healthcare providers; it directly affects every patient in the country.
The government must understand that advocating for patients is not a crime nor an act of disobedience, but rather an integral part of healthcare that ensures patients’ voices are heard and their rights are protected.
We can prevent this by urging lawmakers to reconsider and amend the provisions of Bill C-36. By doing so, we will protect the indispensable role of advocacy in healthcare, safeguard patient rights, and ensure that Canadian healthcare remains a model of excellence and compassion.
Join us in standing against Bill C-36 and protect the rights of healthcare professionals to advocate for their patients. Please sign this petition to demand that our lawmakers reject or amend Bill C-36 to safeguard the rights of healthcare providers and the health and wellbeing of all Canadians.
