Sam Smith started this petition to Oatly and

Oatly drink/liquid products are currently sold in Tetra-Pak style cartons in the UK. These cartons are a composite of paperboard, plastic and aluminum and are not easily recyclable in typical kerbside recycling. As a result, they often end up in landfill, being shipped in bails along with other materials for 'recycling' that are often years before being processed, or in the ocean where they contribute micro-plastic toxicity.

Moreover, where these cartons are processed the 'recycling' would be more accurately described as 'down-cycling'.. The process is not efficient and effective enough to create new cartons. There is high wastage, and a significant drop in purity and quality of the salvaged materials (with the exception of the aluminum, which is almost infinitely recyclable). Based on cartons as an initial product, there is a very low limit on the number of generations of recycling. Also the types of products that can be created from these waste cartons is very limited. This means as a source for recycling, cartons are a particularly poor product.

Therefor, this petition is to invite Oatly to introduce a zero plastic packaging solution - My suggestion would be glass bottles with aluminum lids and natural rubber seals. The rationale for this is; (A) these materials are more easily, widely and genuinely recycled, (B) that they are less harmful if not recycled, (C) are an ideal material for a refill / reuse / zero waste model. However, aluminum or even a bio/plant plastic may be be preferable given life-cycle analysis.

We the undersigned politely invite Oatly to engage in a meaningful and thorough life-cycle analysis of alternative packaging solutions that do not contain any plastic. We would request that they then implement the least ecologically and environmentally harmful solution to their packaging, either globally or per territory as appropriate given the life-cycle analysis.

As Oatly have been highly successful in driving progress with regard to non-dairy alternatives and the associated reduction in carbon emissions. My hope is that they will be amiable to finding such a solution, and quick to bring it to the marketplace. Thereby driving similar progress in regards to waste packaging, ahead of any international or local/national legislation regarding single use plastics / packaging waste in general.
