NYC School Chancellor Walcott: Oppose EHSA charter school co-location & support a CPE I/II Middle School at JREC

The Issue

NYC parents are looking for true choices for middle school and few middle schools in New York City offer the high-quality, enriched instruction and active learning approach the Central Park East Elementary Schools have a proven track record of creating. Please support a progressive education choice in Harlem!

Co-locating two expanding charter schools in the Jackie Robinson Alternative Educational Complex will threaten CPE I with overcrowding and undermine the ongoing effort to create a grade expansion for the successful sister schools, CPE I and II.

Thank you for your comments and great concerns regarding the co-location of two additional schools in the Jackie Robinson Alternative Educational Complex. Central Park East has had a great academic success record in educating our young scholars, and in fact the school has received high honors from DOE for enriching the lives of our middle school students and preparing them for high school and beyond. I will present your concerns to Congressman Rangel, Councilwoman Mark-Viverito and DOE for further review. Sincerely, Geoffrey Eaton

The politicians pay a lot of lip service to the uidea of school choice. There are many traditional schools in District 4. There are many charter schools in District 4. There are NO Progressive Middle Schools in District 4. The CPE schools have a 39 year history of success. CPE 1 is already housed in the JREC Building, CPE 2 is 2 blocks away - it is a natural location for this expansion. I do not see why a new, unproven charter school should be prioritized over CPE 2 in this space.

I believe I want my child to enjoy his life in Harlem with these kind of institutions around. They've proven themselves to be the most effective schools in the area. No doubt about it.
