NYC DOE staff should be remote for Chancellor's Day on June 8th & Clerical Day on June 9

NYC DOE staff should be remote for Chancellor's Day on June 8th & Clerical Day on June 9
The Issue
As we approach Chancellor's Conference Day on June 8th and Clerical Day on June 9th, we urge the Department of Education to mandate that all staff members work remotely on these two work days. Our staff working remotely will not negatively impact families or children since no students are supposed to be in attendance these days. However, this decision is crucial for the safety and well-being of our educators and their families.
The Canadian Wildfires has taken a toll on our city and the health of our residents, and it is important that we continue to take precautions to prevent any health issues our staff may develop as a result. According to recent data from airnow.gov, the air quality in NYC ranges from 165-180 on June 7th and is expected to be as high the next few days. This alarming statistic highlights the need for continued vigilance in preventing vital staff members from becoming sick, especially those with prior health conditions that put them more at risk. Air quality numbers in this range are extremely unhealthy and everyone, not only those with prior health issues, may experience negative health effects and sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects.
By mandating remote work for Chancellor's Conference Day and Clerical Day, we can ensure that our staff members are not put at unnecessary risk by traveling to schools or other locations. Additionally, remote work allows for greater flexibility and accessibility for those who may have caregiving responsibilities or health concerns.
Furthermore, studies have shown that remote work can increase productivity and job satisfaction among employees. We understand that some may argue against remote work due to concerns about connectivity issues or lack of access to necessary resources. However, with proper planning and communication, these challenges can be overcome.
In conclusion, mandating remote work for Chancellor's Conference Day and Clerical Day is a necessary step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of our educators during these uncertain times. We urge you to consider this petition as you make your decision regarding this important matter.
Sincerely,
NYC DOE STAFF
