Make the Streets of Long Island City Safe!

Make the Streets of Long Island City Safe!
The Issue
Did you know that as recently as this past Tues April 22 the NYC Department of Transportation has rejected the request of local councilman Jimmy Van Bramers office to implement safety measures to Center Blvd. The office of Jimmy Van Bramer along with Community Board 2 and local residents have requested that the DOT install stop signs, speed bumps and visible crosswalks along the Center Blvd corridor which runs from Borden Ave to 46ave. This stretch of Center Blvd happens to run in front of 1 Elementary School, 1 High School, 2 Atlhetic fields and acts as an access road to the highly sought after Long Island City Waterfront which is home to 2 Playgrounds and 1 dog run. Bottom line is there is a tremendous amount of foot traffic that makes its way to the Long Island City Waterfront yet the DOT does not believe that our roads need to be amended for the safety of LIC pedestrians, cyclists or vehicles.
With the tremendous development of Hunters Point that has happened over the past several years it is an absolute necessity that the DOT implements the safety measures necessary to keep all of those who work and live in LIC safe. As a community we can achieve this by slowing down the traffic on our streets. In order to do this we must push the DOT to post speed limits, add stop signs, speed bumps and make cross walks visible to pedestrians as well as vehicular traffic.
With your support we hope to get the attention of the DOT and let them know that as a community we will not be silenced by their refusal of our requests for safer streets, but we will continue to voice our concerns as residents of what we believe is a neighborhood worth fighting for. As a community we were able to win the much needed changes to 5th street (which will be happening soon) as well as making 49th st one way from 5th st to Vernon Blvd including the addition of speed bumps in front of our beloved Shady Park. If we can get 1000 signatures this will go a long way in securing the safety of our neighborhood.
