Stop the disenfranchisement of students of color in Queens elementary school!

Help me tell my school to change our student election process to allow kids to chose their own representatives. Right now, the teachers decide who gets to run for our student council. That’s not fair and I am asking my school to change the election rules to give all kids a chance to run for office and to chose who they want to vote for! Thank you! -Hugo, age 9

Mom’s note:  Any process for student elections where the teachers chose who gets to run for office and the students have no say contradicts one of the principle tenets of our democracy: no taxation (government) without representation. The whole point of our democracy is that the people get to chose their leaders. Yet, at my son’s school in District 30, Queens, NY, the teachers select who may run for election, thereby disenfranchising the kids from selecting their own leaders. What exactly is this teaching the kids in a school that is predominantly attended by kids of color (98%) but that their voices do not matter and that they should be complacent with their own disenfranchisement. These kids deserve to learn what their rights should be and how elections are actually supposed to work. We are asking that the school change its election process to allow the children to chose their own representatives. Please sign my son’s petition if you agree! Thank you!
