Save the Seal Sculptures in East River Park

Save the Seal Sculptures in East River Park
The Issue
New York City is planning on closing East River Park for up to 5 years while it adds new flood protection measures. Rather than saving any existing pieces of the park, the city has chosen to bulldoze the current landscape and add 8 feet of landfill to heighten the Park.
In addition to killing hundreds of large, old, shade-providing trees, it is permanently disrupting over 2 miles of ecology. The city has been equally neglectful in providing a plan for saving the existing art.
The Seal Sculptures by G. Augustine Lynas in John V. Lindsay East River Park have been enjoyed by countless park goers for nearly two decades and future generations deserve to enjoy them as well.
The community demands that New York City safely remove the sculptures (the large seals and smaller turtles and crabs) before construction starts, and re-install them in the new park. With the project having a budget of roughly 1.4 billion dollars, the City should have no issues in ensuring that this art is returned to the park upon its reopening.
Please let our City officials know that art is an important part of New York and deserves to be protected. Sign the petition and help Save the Seals!
