Mental help support, training and education for ALL schools. (Elementary, JHS & H.S)

Mental help support, training and education for ALL schools. (Elementary, JHS & H.S)
The Issue
The number of mental health crises among adolescents and kids is on the rise, so mental health should be prioritized as early as elementary school. It is imperative that there is more education about mental health, as well as TRAINING for students and school staff (especially special education staff). I believe schools are not equipped to handle certain behaviors to deescalate situations, leaving the parents with little to no support. In the current system, there are no set protocols when school staff cannot deescalate a situation other than calling 911 or contacting parents/guardians. This should not be the default response when schools are in session. As parents, we are encouraged to get mental health training, but schools should also receive this training. When a crisis occurs and an IEP plan isn't enough, the NYC Board of Education should be able to provide schools with proper training or access to a mental health professional to step in and help when needed.
In NYC DOE schools, teachers, and other student support staff should be trained to recognize early signs of mental health issues in students and to use tools to deescalate issues before they explode (whenever possible).
New York City Board of Education needs to update their current system. In order to accommodate children with special needs and their parents, we need to establish better protocols.
In today's society, mental health is critical, and should no longer be stigmatized. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and as a society we need to recognize that. Schools and parents need to work together to make sure children of all ages receive the support they deserve. This starts with us!
Who better to advocate for yourself or a loved one than you? Your voice matters. Be the change you wish to see.
Early intervention is the best prevention!
