Please make adult-sized pacifiers and bottle nipples available to the american special needs community.
The Issue
It is a less invasive form of feeding than a G tube. It reaches farther in to the mouth than those products made for infants and would allow larger children, adults, and people with cranial deformities to latch on effectively. The use of a pacifier is a technique of soothing a patient that is developmentally delayed when otherwise they might receive a sedative medication. Using a bottle to feed food to a patient allows them to experience the sensation of taste, that of which otherwise they may be lacking or denied. It promotes the use of the muscles in the mouth and throat. Patients with Cerebral Palsy, among other conditions, are prone to a weak suck reflex. Oral stimulation allows for practice of the suck/swallow sequence and can open the possibility of oral feedings or simply tighten the muscles in the airway allowing for a more effective breathing. Some studies have suggested the use of a pacifier at night may reduce or eliminate snoring. This is just a few of a plethora of possible benefits one can experience if they were allowed access to these products. Please support my petition to making a fuller life available to the often invisible population of people with special needs.
