As it currently stands, the decision has been made by Marrickville council to proceed with the Demolition of the 1st Coptic Orthodox Church in Australia, which was built in 1884, and later dedicated to the men and women who fought and died in WWI and WWII.

This church was established by the great saint, the 116th Patriarch of Alexandria and the See of St. Mark, the late Pope Cyril VI.  

To demolish this building is a clear message that, the history of the ancient faith, the Coptic heritage and it’s beginnings in Australia, are insignificant, first and foremost to Australians and secondly to the greater Australian Coptic community.

The State Government of NSW, is strongly urged to immediately intervene, to save the 1st Coptic Orthodox Church from demolition. The Heritage Council of NSW is required to list the Church on the State Heritage Register, to protect and preserve the building, for the purpose of upholding the rich and ancient traditions of the Coptic people in Australia. This building must be passed on to future generations, so that they too will understand what came before them.
