Police officers conducting random breath tests should wear masks.

The issue

Police officers are entrusted with the safety of the public. However, when they are conducting random breath tests, they are not required to wear masks, so they do not wear masks.

One way the CoVid-19 virus spreads is through respiratory droplets carrying the virus entering the body through the nose, mouth and eyes. Masks provide a barrier against these droplets, and are used by most workers in close contact with the public, such as shop assistants and cafe and restaurant workers.

A police officer conducting a drive-through random breath test leans towards the driver, who is in an enclosed capsule (the vehicle), and is often within a metre of the driver as the officer talks to the driver. A mask would ensure that respiratory droplets would not be transmitted from one party to the other.
