Prevent the St.Ives North Primary School's Gifted and Talented Unit being restricted to students from the local catchment area.

Nearly 25 years after its establishment the NSW Department of Education has decided to restrict the Gifted and Talented Unit at St.Ives North Primary School, so that only students in the local catchment area can be part of the unit. This is mainly due to extreme overcrowding in government-run schools in the North Sydney region. Such a move threatens to destroy the very essence of the Gifted and Talented program and rob potential students of learning, memories and opportunities.
The St.Ives North Primary school website writes that the Gifted and Talented Unit provides "full-time educational enrichment for gifted students in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6." A restriction of the unit to the local catchment area, would mean that Gifted students in other areas that do not have such a program would not be able to have a chance of being part of a learning environment that caters to their needs. Many high-profile success stories have arisen from the unit and have set these Gifted students up for a prospective future in high school and beyond.
By signing this petition you will be giving Gifted and Talented children the chance to develop in an environment that will ultimately support them to be magnificent contributors to society in the future. Your signature on this petition could provide a Gifted student the learning environment he or she deserves.
