Stop shooting Western Cape Baboons. CT2 troop

The Issue

Animal rights activists want a property owner to be charged and prosecuted for shooting a young adult female baboon last week that was on his property. The baboon was humanely euthanised due to her serious injuries. X-rays showed pellets in both legs from previous incidents in the area. And in this case a bullet had  paralysed her immediately but did not kill her. She tried to drag herself, with the help of another pregnant female, to safety.

The monitors had notified the group of properties that the baboons were in the area. They asked for access to the property but were denied. A resident chose to shoot a high powered weapon, in a residential area, instead of opening the gate to let the monitors in.

How is it accepted that a gun was shot in a residential area and potential public space,  Cecilia Forest where many hikers, dog walkers and cyclists frequent all day.

Human lives were put in danger and a baboon lost her life after suffering considerably until GHSPCA was able to capture her.

It cannot be allowed to shoot baboons indiscriminately and more so, shooting in public / residential areas according to following Acts:

*Animals Protection Act no 71 of 1962 (SPCA) states any activity deemed as animal cruelty under this Act ie shooting and / or harming a baboon unnecessarily.

*Firearms Control Act (Law Enforcement) states chapter 16, 120 Offences (7) it is an offence to discharge a firearm, an antique firearm or any airgun in a built-up area or any public place

Please sign so that this callous behaviour does not happen again. Justice for all our baboons shot by intolerant residents

Thank you
