Save the Arecibo Observatory

Save the Arecibo Observatory
The Issue
For years, the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico (AOPR) has been one of the world’s largest single-dish telescopes and the birthplace of significant astronomical discoveries that have impacted our human endeavors in fundamental ways. But, on November 19, 2020, the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced that it would close the observatory after multiple assessments independent engineering companies determined that “the telescope structure is in danger of a catastrophic failure and its cables may no longer be capable of carrying the loads they were designed to support.”
The storms, hurricanes, and earthquakes in Puerto Rico that occurred in the 2010s have gradually resulted in major structural damage that has prompted the NSF to pull the plug and close the facilities as it lacks the funds and the ideas on how to quickly repair this iconic structure. This moment is one in which we all need to show up as citizens to support the cause of seeking both the funds and the science-based solutions required to keep this radio telescope operating, serving the world, and helping our country maintain its scientific leadership.
This petition is a call for us to put our collective talents and resources to the continuation of the incredible legacy already tied to this institution. This is an urgent call to the bold, the audacious thinkers of the world to submit their engineering and science-based solutions to this modern dilemma. This is a call to the generosity of spirit of the individuals and organizations that believe in science’s power to advance humanity’s wellbeing agenda to partner with NSF and provide much-needed collaboration and funding.
Saving the Arecibo Observatory couldn’t be more aligned with our country’s vision of technological and scientific achievement. Let’s do it because we should, and we can.
