Eradicate fishing as a Phys. Ed. unit at NPHS

The Issue

For as long as I can remember, Physical Education is a class in which students learn how to take care of their physical health and wellbeing. In this class, students participate in a multitude of units such as pickle ball, frisbee golf, volleyball, wiffel ball and many others. We also take a CPR unit to ensure we are not only caring about our own health but also the health of people around us who may be in need of medical help. One unit sticks out from these other ones. That unit is sport fishing. At NPHS we have an "optional" (as in, it's the main unit and if you don't do it you can stay at the school and hang out in the weight room) fishing unit. As part of this unit, students are bussed to a local pond and proceed to participate in what is known as sport fishing. "Recreational fishing, also called sport fishing, is fishing for pleasure or competition. It can be contrasted with commercial fishing, which is fishing for profit, or subsistence fishing, which is fishing for survival." Fishing simply for pleasure or fun is absolutely inhumane. Out of context, fishing seems like something out of a horror movie. Baiting a fish into thinking it is getting a treat, and proceeding to pierce its mouth with a sharp hook seems kind of silly. It is one thing to do this on the basis of survival as some people rely on this to get their food. However, to participate in this inhumane act towards living, breathing animals simply for one's own pleasure is absolutely cruel. Pulling an animal out of the water on a hook only to take a picture of it and show it off to your friends is very much torture to them. I do not think this type of behavior should be promoted and taught as part of the Physical Education curriculum. I believe that it not only tortures innocent animals for no reason other than human entertainment but it also further promotes the degradation of animals. Therefore, I deem it necessary that we as a community bring attention to this injustice and abolish this inhumane practice, starting at our very own high school. I am creating this petition to raise awareness about the fact that this is a unit in our Physical Ed. curriculum, in hopes that the NPHS board of ed. will see the issues at hand and work to remove this unit from our Physical Ed. class.
