Paragon Student Lets - we demand our money back and better treatment!
The Issue
Around 11am on Monday 19th October 2020, over 800 students received emails from Paragon Management explaining that they need to evict all of their residents because there are serious faults in all four of their student blocks - these faults are also present in the two non-student blocks. Many students received less than 24hrs notice to move out, some of them receiving emails at 10pm with classes the next day - which is absolutely absurd! Our contracts are being terminated and we are all being given anywhere between a few hours and six days to pack up and get out.
Notting Hill Genesis (the company that own and manage Paragon) have stated in their Notice to Quit that "the construction of the block is inadequate and defective such that continued occupation represents a significant risk to the health and safety of those occupying which cannot be adequately mitigated in the long term". While the company haven't communicated to students directly regarding these faults, news reports have stated that "building performance issues" and "cladding issues highlighted in the wake of the Grenfell tragedy had prompted recent safety checks" (Sky News) and that "faulty cavity barriers [...] were found" (BBC News). Why weren't students told about these issues when we moved in rather than having to be evicted a month after moving in?
All students are now being moved to Wembley, which is almost five miles away from the university the majority of us attend - University of West London. This will cause a lot of financial disruption as many students work alongside their studies, meaning that they will have to travel further or find a job closer to home. We have each paid over £3000 for this term's rent, which is now being kept by Notting Hill Genesis with very little information regarding refunds or transferring the funds we've already paid to our new accommodation.
We demand from Notting Hill Genesis the following:
- Partial refunds to any student that requests one without any eligibility criteria - whether this is to a UK based bank account or otherwise
- For those moving to Wembley and staying there: for students to be given the option of transferring any funds to their new accommodation
- For students to be given clearer and adequate notice when they are moving out and how belongings are being moved - many students are missing out on their education to sort this out.
