In a powerful piece just published in The Guardian, former Compassion Over Killing investigator Scott David reveals the hidden horrors he witnessed working inside one of the fastest pig-killing plants in the nation -- horrors that could spread nationwide if the USDA successfully expands its high-speed slaughter program. Read and share Scott’s op-ed today (using our links below) to help put an end to this dangerous and cruel program! For nearly six months, Scott worked undercover inside Quality Pork Processors, which kills about 1,300 pigs every hour under the USDA’s pilot program. The plant is considered a model for the program’s nationwide expansion, yet according to Scott, “[W]hen no one thought the public or USDA was watching, behind the slaughterhouse’s closed doors, I documented pig carcasses covered in feces and abscesses being processed for human consumption, and workers – under intense pressure to keep up with high line speeds – beating, dragging, and electrically prodding pigs to make them move faster.” Under the USDA’s proposal, the New Swine Slaughter Inspection System (NSIS) would allow for unlimited kill speeds at pig slaughterhouses across the country while transferring key government inspection duties to slaughter plants themselves--jeopardizing animal welfare, worker safety, and food safety nationwide. In The Guardian, Scott appeals to the USDA: “Halting the expansion of the dangerous pilot program and bringing it to an immediate end is the only conscientious and compassionate choice for the USDA, a federal agency that has the opportunity, and the responsibility, to put animals, consumers, and workers above powerful pork industry interests.” You can help stop NSIS by sharing Scott’s piece on social media today!
