It’s National Pig Day, and you can help MILLIONS of pigs nationwide today by submitting a quick comment to the USDA to put the breaks on its dangerous and cruel high-speed slaughter program! (Use our sample text below.) The USDA has extended the comment period on its proposed high-speed slaughter program, the New Swine Slaughter Inspection System (NSIS), until May 2 -- and your voice is crucial to stop it! In 2015, Compassion Over Killing (COK) exposed egregious cruelty and food safety issues in its investigation of Quality Pork Processors (QPP), one of the fastest slaughter plants in the country operating under the pilot program for NSIS. COK’s footage revealed pigs being shocked, dragged, and improperly stunned as workers struggled to keep up with the fast pace. We also documented that pigs covered in feces and pus-filled abscesses were processed for human consumption with a USDA inspection seal of approval. Not much seems to have changed since then. According to 2017 USDA records, this same high-speed slaughter plant was found to be forcing pigs to move faster than normal walking speeds. The records note that the plant had even received multiple warnings about this issue during weekly management meetings. Yet the USDA boasts in its misguided proposal that no plants have been issued non-compliance reports for forcing pigs to move too quickly. If the USDA implements NSIS, it will put industry profits over the welfare of millions of pigs, as well as workers and consumers nationwide. These pigs need your voice TODAY! Help us stop NSIS today by visiting the comment page (http://bit.ly/highspeedslaughter) and submitting your comment. Use our sample below or send your own polite message -- and don’t forget to share our petition (http://bit.ly/stopHIMP) with your friends and family to multiply your impact! SAMPLE COMMENT: I’m writing as a concerned American consumer in opposition to the proposed Modernization of Swine Slaughter Inspection rule, which would roll back progress for animals, consumers, and workers. Under this rule, the New Swine Slaughter Inspection System (NSIS) would place key food safety inspection duties into the hands of slaughter plants themselves, while these facilities operate at dangerously high line speeds, and many problems will likely go unnoticed. Compassion Over Killing’s investigation of a plant under the pilot high-speed slaughter program, HIMP, revealed pigs covered in feces and pus-filled abscesses being processed for human consumption with a USDA seal of approval. The investigation also showed pigs being dragged, kicked, excessively shocked, and improperly stunned as workers struggled to keep up with the facility’s high line speeds. There is widespread opposition to the high-speed slaughter program within the federal government, including by USDA whistleblowers and members of Congress. The USDA’s own Office of the Inspector General stated that the “HIMP program has shown no measurable improvement to the inspection process.” I urge you to protect workers, consumers, and animals and end, rather than expand, this program.
