Global Thank You to All Health Workers for their sacrifices in the fight against COVID-19

The Issue

“As health workers around the world put their lives on the line to save others in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, many have died and thousands of them have tested positive.”

- Al Jazeera

Appeal

We are appealing to the Norwegian Nobel Committee directly to provide global recognition towards all health workers who have risked their lives in the fight against COVID-19.

We are specifically appealing to the Norwegian Nobel Committee to represent on behalf of all of us around the world to bestow a Global Thank You Note to every health worker who is/was heavily involved in battling the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes (and not limited to) doctors, paramedics, nurses, pharmacists, scientists, healthcare volunteers, cleaners, army, police, ambulance drivers, etc.

Our suggestions on how this can be achieved are as follows:

  • Global Acknowledgement that is presented to all health workers in recognition for their services.
  • This can be done  before or after the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the rightfully chosen candidate for 2020.
  • We suggest that this accolade is given live and broadcasted through the Nobel Media platform under the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony in Stockholm.

To provide this acknowledgement by the Norwegian Nobel Committee would be an honour for all parties involved.

The members of this prestigious council are that of good standing and exceptional achievements and qualifications, appropriately chosen by the Norwegian parliament.

Why the Norwegian Nobel Committee?

The Norwegian Nobel Committee is the committee responsible for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel Peace Prize is known globally as the prize given towards extraordinary individuals or organisations who have made exemplary contributions that has resulted to :

1. The Betterment of Mankind

2. The Highest Form of Altruism

Hence, because of this, we believe that it is only appropriate that the Norwegian Nobel Committee provides this global acknowledgement to all health workers, on behalf of all of us.

Other International Bodies

We are also appealing to the following international bodies listed below to provide support and awareness in our aim to provide global recognition and acknowledgement to the sacrifices that all health workers have incurred on a global scale:

  1. Norwegian Nobel Committee
  2. World Health Organization
  3. UNICEF
  4. UNESCO
  5. United Nations
  6. Amnesty International
  7. Human Rights Watch

WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW?

There are currently more than 1.6 million cases in total, with deceased cases more than 96,000 worldwide. In comparison, the 2003 SARS epidemic had a total of 8,098 cases and the more recent 2013 MERS epidemic had a total of 2,494. Albeit large quantities in their own right, they were minuscule in comparison to the widespreadness of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Right now, the best that we can do to help our health workers is to #StayHome and flatten the curve in order to stop the spread of the virus and not exceed the hospital capacity limit.

We need to stay at home so that they can come home. But we also believe that our healthcare heroes deserve more from us.

They deserve gratitude for their selflessness and courage.

They deserve the highest form of recognition for fighting against one of the most widespread diseases of the century.

They deserve their efforts to be acknowledged to the rest of the world.

CHALLENGES FACED BY OUR HEALTH WORKERS

We have heard of fallen heroes on the news such as Dr Habib Zaidi (UK), Dr Shirin Rouhani (Iran) and most famously, the whistleblower Dr Li WenLiang (China), who was one of the first victims of the virus back in January. However, a majority of the health workers who have become infected and casualties to this virus remain anonymous. This should not be the case.

While we stay at home, hundreds and thousands of frontliners are risking their own lives to save others, and to defeat our common enemy. As the number of cases increases, there is no time for rest. Every day, frontliners work to the bone and put on layers of protection as though preparing for war - all the while sleepless and overwhelmed.

There is no denying that this has also taken a toll on them mentally. While many of us try to understand the seriousness of the pandemic through daily media updates on the rising death toll, health workers have had to watch it unfold before their very eyes, helpless as they witness their patients take their last breaths without their loved ones by their side.

And yet, despite all this, they persevere.

Therefore, we need your help to make our appeal possible. We understand that what we are asking for is unprecedented, unconventional, and perhaps even outlandish to say the least. However, extraordinary acts of valour in human history justifies unprecedented exceptions.

Let us act now, together, in these times of uncertainty. Let us show our health heroes the highest form of gratitude by signing the petition for their worldwide recognition, their names and actions to be remembered forever.

Our Goal is to reach 2500 SIGNATURES.

With your help, let's make this dream a reality.

Please sign the petition to show we care.
