Stop Whale Hunting In Norway

Stop Whale Hunting In Norway
The Issue
This is a petition started by the Ocean Research & Conservation Association of Ireland (ORCA Ireland), to the Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg, to call on a ban on the cruel, unsustainable, and unethical practice of annual whale hunts, known as “whaling”.
The annual mass slaughter of some of the most vulnerable yet important species for healthy ecosystem functioning is under threat due to hunts in Norway that officially begin in April and end in September every single year!
Whaling occurs in Norway results in a dramatic chase to harpoon minke whales which are unfortunate enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time! Some of these minke whales have been shown to be pregnant when they’re killed!
This year, Norway killed more whales than in the last 5 years, at 575 minke whales slaughtered. According to the International Whaling Commission, in 2019 the Norwegian whale quota for whale hunting was 1,278. This is a 28% increase from the previous year. The use of Explosive Penthrite Grenade Harpoon is a method that has been used for years in the act of killing whales. This vicious way of killing can take up to 25 minutes for the whale to die - a slow and inhumane way of slaughter.
In 1986, the International Whaling Commission banned commercial whaling in a global moratorium as whale populations plummeted, with some species coming close to extinction. Today, Iceland, Norway, and Japan insist on pursuing an outdated and ecologically disastrous practice of whaling. All countries oppose the ban and have lodged official objections, continuing the annual commercial hunts.
Norway has a self-regulated of more than 1200 whales every year, and now surpasses Japan and Iceland in its whale hunting quotas (which do not include dolphins like the Faroe Island). Norway now officially kills more whales than any country in the world.
Norwegian whaling belongs to the past, is only maintained for narrow political reasons, and should be phased out as quickly as possible.
