Allow Michael Szot to return to Northwestern on his own will as a full time student for the 2014-2015 academic school year.

We believe that Michael Szot, a rising senior at Northwestern University, should be allowed to return to Northwestern on his own will for the 2014-2015 academic school year following the events that transpired on July 19th, 2014. By signing this petition, we show our support as a Northwestern community for Mike, hoping that he will be allowed to return for his senior year.
On July 19th, 2014, an accidental car crash involving Mike, Sajaad Syed, and Mihir Boddupalli, a fellow student at Northwestern, occurred in the Northwestern suburbs of Chicago. A circumstance that many college students, and adults alike, have faced at least once in their lives. An accident that the residents of the neighborhood deem so unlikely that the probability of it occurring was virtually zero. An outcome that nobody, whether a friend, family member, or innocent bystander, wanted. An event that people should view as nothing more than it was. An accident.
As a result of this accident, Northwestern University is considering suspending Mike from the university, not allowing him to return for his senior year to earn his degree. This accident led to the loss of a loved member of the Northwestern community, but that doesn’t mean it should lead to the loss of two. While the Northwestern community is mourning the loss of Mihir, it does not want to see Mike’s right to an education taken away as punishment. We want to support Mike through this tough time, and not allowing him to return to Northwestern will severely impede our ability to do so.
Mike and Mihir were very close friends, living on the same floor during their freshman year and going on to be roommates during their sophomore year. They showed nothing but the utmost respect for one another and would never want harm to befall on the other. Mihir’s parents and brother agree that Mike should be allowed to return to Northwestern, stating, “Mihir would have wanted Mike to graduate from Northwestern on time and so do we.” We urge Northwestern to act in a manner consistent with what Mihir would have wanted: for Mike to be given the chance to complete his senior year and earn his degree.
Anything stated in this petition should not be construed as a statement or opinion relating to the pending charges by the State’s Attorney’s office or future legal matters and is strictly limited to the matter of Mike Szot’s education at Northwestern University.
