I keep hearing: "Northwestern doesn't care." "Northwestern only does what it wants to do." "Why bother; they've never helped." and "Why now?"
Share this petition far and wide to spread the message that:
- Northwestern should care. Thriving public schools make a vibrant community where people want to live. The folks at Yale and around have been in this discussion for a while. Read more here.
- Why bother? You've got one system that needs an incredible amount of resources and another that is swimming in wealth and continuing to grab more. At some point, it's probably good to understand where potential investments in Evanston children are going, understanding that securities funds are more important than the children of this town. So, as a private university, you don't have to pay taxes, so that you can invest in US and foreign equity securities, Private equity, Venture capital, Absolute return, and Real assets. How about real Evanston public schools?
- WHY NOT NOW? It should have been decades ago. It didn't happen. It should have been during the Ryan Field negotiation—public schools weren't as sexy and appealing as a new stadium with lights. It should have been before a temporary stadium was rapidly put up or before the first bucket of popcorn was sold. It should have been before an Allen Center capital campaign for $600 million was announced.
And if Northwestern needs specific projects, I'm sure that the district's students can come up with some. Crumbling auditoriums? Flooded auditoriums? Transportation? Recess support? Crossing guards? Leaky libraries? Unairconditioned shared spaces?
