The Issue

Northfield Public Schools will be implementing full-time distance learning for Northfield High School students on Nov. 19.

In a letter dated Nov. 10 sent by Dr. Matt Hillmann, Northfield Public Schools Superintendent states “...Based on public health guidance, the Minnesota Department of Education’s direction, the combination of a significant case rate above 50 infections per 10,000 residents and the increasing case rates at Northfield High School, all Northfield High School athletics and activities will also be suspended beginning on November 19, 2020.”

The decision to suspend sports and activities at Northfield High School was not made by the Minnesota State High School League, but by Northfield Public Schools.

At this point, it appears schools throughout Minnesota will be finishing fall sports and activities and will be starting winter sports and activities while sadly, Northfield Public Schools won’t be represented.

As parents, family, friends, taxpayers and community members of Northfield High School students, we would like an opportunity to have our voices heard, allow students to participate in activities and sports while following COVID-19 protocols. We understand that the winter ahead is a difficult one. Competitions may not be able to be played due to COVID cases. Scheduling of activities will be messy. But, don’t we owe it to our youth to at least try? Let them play!
