Open The Judson Bottom Road and Save This Historic, Scenic Route!

The Issue

Please open and save the historic and scenic Judson Bottom Road. This road is enjoyed by many bicyclists, walkers, joggers, motorcyclists, classic and sport car groups, and others just wanting to go for a scenic ride along the river. This road is also vital to those who live on it. In winter months the fairly new Rockford Road has no maintenance after dark, often leaving huge snow drifts which are impassable by vehicles. The Bottom Road is protected by the hillside and can be the only way in or out in inclement weather. Alternatively, Valerie Road is extremely steep with no shoulder and a steep embankment on one side, It barely has room for two smaller vehicles when there are no snowbanks.  It was not built for the traffic that is going through that neighborhood and it even goes right between two families' homes. Most importantly, the Judson Bottom Road is the shortest, quickest route for emergency responders, or to get someone to ER.

This road was the route used by Native Americans and early settlers. There  are burial mounds, archeological sites and the Minnemoshinona Waterfall Park which is promoted as a tourist site to visit in MN.

There have been rock slides throughout its history, including big ones in the 1960's. Unusually heavy snow, and heavy rains, this year caused these rocks to break away once again.

There was $2-3 million set aside for this road to be maintained, but the money was allocated someplace else a few years back. Remedies for these situations are addressed in mountainous areas such as implementing a "netting" that allows vegetation growth and keeps rocks from falling. This type of rock issue has not occurred in many years on the Judson Bottom Road and may not again for a long time.  Although, a professional geologist or mining engineer would have the best analysis.  While safety is of utmost importance, we do not feel that the road has needed to be closed this long or permanently; especially when there have been talks of making it a biking &/or walking path.

If the Judson Bottom Road is left to nature, it won't take long for there to be major issues on Lookout Drive or to start affecting the homes along Marvin Boulevard.  Maintenance is key, and once the city took over this portion of the road from Nicollet County, maintenance has been less than minimum.

So let's remove the boulders/rocks, open the Judson Bottom Road and let our community, and beyond, enjoy this beautiful area once again.  Let the people who call this home have the access to their jobs, to the city and to the emergency help they may need.

Please sign and show your support to open save The Judson Bottom Road!

THANK YOU!
