So I had my site meeting with Rob Waltham and two council officers last Wednesday, and he was not a happy bunny when he first arrived. I was stood talking with the two officers when Rob arrived, and as soon as he got out of his car he started accusing me of putting false information out on my flyers around the Hilton Avenue area. He was very agitated and quite aggressive in his tone, and for the first 5 minutes or so we had a bit of a verbal ding dong about the rights and wrongs of my flyers, rather childish and very embarrassing for the two officers who had to stand by whilst this was going on. Of course it was simply an old tactic he was using in an attempt to put me on the back foot before the meeting actually got underway, and I gave him as good as I got. I must admit I found it very odd behaviour for the leader of North Lincolnshire Council to be stood in a public place shouting the odds with a member of the public who just wants him to look at an issue that is a concern for thousands of people in the area, very odd.
After this bit of one-upmanship we got down to discussing the options for improving safety at the roundabout. I asked about removing the traffic lights and constructing pedestrian bridges over the roads where the lights are currently, and again this was not entirely ruled out by either the officers or Rob Waltham, however they do have some concerns about the height of the bridges and the availability of space for the construction. We also discussed the narrow footpath that runs along the side of Doncaster Road adjacent to the Berkeley Hotel and the possibility of widening this.
I was left with the impression that they would like to make changes and that they would go away and look at the feasibility of what was discussed, of course this does not mean anything will actually get done
The officers and Rob Waltham are under the opinion that building the new roundabout on the M181 should be completed before anything is done at the Berkeley roundabout, they believe that once this is in place the traffic at the Berkeley will be largely reduced. I don't disagree that it will reduce traffic but the dangers at the roundabout will still be there and I want something done about them now, this is what Liz Redfern promised us and the money was already allocated.
We need to keep the pressure on Rob Waltham with this petition, we are more than halfway to the target of 1500 signatures that will force a debate in the council chamber so please share it and encourage others to sign.
Cheers
Neil Herrick
