The North Lincolnshire Councils constitution currently requires 1,500 signatures on a petition to force an open debate in the council chamber. This is great for democracy as it gives ordinary people an opportunity to speak out on issues of concern, and you would think that a council would want to hear about the issues that concern us wouldn't you, after all it is their duty to serve the public, isn't it ?
Of course I am living in a fantasy world, they don't want to hear about our concerns and they certainly don't want them discussed in an open debate. And why do I say this, I say it because on Thursday 17th May the ruling conservative group of the council are putting forward a motion to increase the number of signatures required on a petition, they want it to go up fourfold from 1,500 to 6,200.
If this motion goes through it will be yet another blatant act led by Rob Waltham to silence the voice of dissent, and you should be in no doubt that it will happen because every single one of the conservative councillors in attendance will vote for it.
The upshot of this is we only have until Wednesday 16th May to get 1,500 signatures on our petition and deliver it to the council, after that we will need 6,200.
Its at 949 today, please share and do everything you can to help us reach our target.
