There have been many casualties on this road in recent years – some of which have been fatal. It is a disgrace that cars travelling eastbound are able to cut across Mortal Ash Hill onto Kirton Road, where cars are approaching at speeds of 70+ mph. It is also an absolute disgrace that cars are able to travel at 70mph eastbound, where the road narrows from a dual to a single carriageway. There is often not enough space for cars to get back in lane. The opportunity to overtake cars here, at the last moment, is misused by many motorists.
My younger brother is 17 years old and he is currently learning how to drive. In light of the current circumstances following the sad passing of, I am not comfortable with him driving this road at the speed cars are allowed to drive it. I drive this road to work everyday and the number of times cars have cut in front of me, leaving me very little time to get out of the way – is astounding. I have also found myself, on numerous occasions, in a very precarious position when travelling eastbound as cars attempt to overtake me at the last moment, when the dual carriageway merges into a single.
It is time to intervene. I propose that the speed limit be lowered to at least 50mph, with speed cameras implemented across the entire road. I also think the addition of an extra roundabout, at the junction where cars leave and join from Kirton Road, would be much safer.
Some members of the public have commented that the surface water on the road is especially unnerving and that this needs to be drained adequately. Others have commented on the potential for casualties of cyclists, who cycle on this road as cars fly past at 70mph. A cycle lane might be more appropriate.
The degree of public anxiety regarding Mortal Ash Hill – not just in recent times, but for many years – is incredibly concerning. My friends, my work colleagues, my family and I deserve to be able to travel on this road safely, knowing that the necessary procedures are in place to protect them.
