Bryan Truax started this petition to North Carolina State House and

My 18 year old daughter, Caitlyn Alexis Truax, was shot in the face and killed on June 3rd 2019 by her ex boyfriend in a senseless act of Domestic Violence. This was a premeditated cold blooded act of murder. However, under current North Carolina law the DA could not try the case as Capital Murder and seek the death penalty due to the circumstances not falling under one of the 11 aggravating factors that are needed to qualify. See this link for the existing factors: https://gilleslaw.com/capital-punishment-death-penalty/

So with Life without Parole the only other option the DA chose to offer the murderer a plea deal. This means he will serve no more than 34 years and will only be in his 50s when he is free to harm other innocent victims. This is certainly not Justice for shooting a defenseless teenage girl in the face.

In North Carolina Last year, 2019, there were 56 Domestic Violence Homicides just in North Carolina.  So far, as of February 2, 2020 there have already been 9 Domestic Violence Homicides this year. The ages of these victims ranged from 6 months to 76 years of age. This must stop.
This is one of the worst types of murder in our state. The victim knew and was in or had been in an intimate, domestic relationship with the killer. The position of trust as well as intimate knowledge of the victim gives the offender the access to commit these horrible crimes.
It is past time for NC to say “NO MORE!!” , and make the punishment fit the crime.
I am asking our law makers to make murder that is connected to Domestic Violence to be an aggravating factor that makes the perpetrators eligible to receive the death penalty in our state.
The sad fact is without this change for many if not most of these the maximum penalty is Life in prison without parole, which many may say is just. However, when you factor in that about 95% of criminal cases in NC are resolved through plea deals most offenders are not doing Life at all. That means these vicious killers are freed at some point and free to commit more violent crimes.
So again I ask you to please consider signing this petition to help me in my fight for Caitlyn, to change this law and help these voiceless victims and their families get Justice.
I have already written and called both of my State Lawmakers and gotten some of their attention. I need your help to let them know that the citizens of NC want these crimes punished to the maximum of the law and want Justice for these helpless victims.
