North Carolina Specialty License Plate White Box Removal

The Issue

We, the undersigned citizens and residents of North Carolina, respectfully petition for the removal of the white box background requirement on specialty license plates. We believe this change will enhance the aesthetic appeal, personalization options, and overall satisfaction of vehicle owners who choose to support various causes, organizations, and institutions through specialty plates.

Reasons for the Petition:

Enhanced Aesthetic Appeal: The white box background currently required on specialty license plates often detracts from the visual design and intended appearance of the plates. Allowing designs to extend across the entire plate will create a more cohesive and visually pleasing look.
Increased Personalization: Vehicle owners choose specialty plates to show support for causes, organizations, and institutions that are important to them. Removing the white box background will provide greater freedom and creativity in plate designs, allowing for more meaningful personalization.
Support for Local Organizations: Specialty plates often serve as a means of fundraising and raising awareness for local charities, schools, and other organizations. A more attractive and personalized plate design can increase interest and participation in these programs, thereby benefiting the community.
Consistency with Other States: Many other states have successfully implemented specialty license plates without the requirement of a white box background, demonstrating that it is feasible and effective. Adopting this approach in North Carolina will align us with best practices observed in other regions.
Conclusion:

We believe that removing the white box background requirement for specialty license plates will not only improve the visual appeal and personalization options for vehicle owners but also support local organizations and align our state with best practices. We respectfully request that the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles, the Governor of North Carolina, and the North Carolina State Legislature take immediate action to amend the current regulations to allow for this change.
