My name Is Lexi Verderber. I am a Senior at Lyons Township North Campus In Lagrange Illinois. Unlike South campus In Western Springs (where parking is more ideal) The parking issue has been a ongoing problem at North Campus. Ever since junior year this started becoming a problem once I got my license but it has gotten so bad to the point where I have had to make this petition. Its truly unfair to the students here at North (who are juniors and seniors that have their license) unlike the south campus students who are not there yet but have more available parking that North campus students can't utilize. Having to deal with this ongoing problem not only is a issue for me but for many of the students here at the North that commute daily. The options to park are very limited and ultimately end up with students having to pay out of pocket which is hard to afford. With the options given with one being permit passes (offered by the Village of Lagrange) are a 15-20 walk from campus and not only are severely expensive but many of the zones have waiting lists so you aren't guaranteed parking. And even if you are qualified for parking the prices are extremely unreasonable and make commuting to school very difficult. There also is offered meter parking but again aren't guaranteed and spots fill up so quickly i'm stranded not knowing where to park. Even though it ends up only being roughly 3 dollars a day, that money adds up over time since it's being paid for daily. Even though I do work like many other highschool students I have to use my hard earned money just to spend on meter parking and parking passes just to go to school. I'm going to college soon and this money i'm using to pay just to park at school can't even be used for academic purposes. When us students can't find parking we ultimately end up getting tickets in which the parking police are not lenient about and come off in an abrupt manner towards students. Now you would think why not just walk or take the bus, but for my case and for many others that does not work. It is not the safest option to walk coming from Brookfield since I have been catcalled and harassed multiple times along the ogden bridge even though it's the only way I can get to Lagrange by walking. The bus is also not an ideal transportation route and with the shortage of busses they end up coming late and not on time to pick up students. I have also had harassment issues which has led me to feel unsafe when taking the bus so even though the busses are free you feel at risk. There has not really been anything done to stop this issue since its becoming a bigger problem especially for families who struggle with money and when the school offered lottery parking these families were not kept in mind. Overall there can be many things done to solve this solution and hopefully this petition reaches the right authorities at North campus so that something can be done.
