Normalize Platonic Affection Among Friends Without Sexualizing It

The Issue

Ever since I can remember, I've found warmth in the casual shows of affection towards my friends - a simple hug, a pat on the back, or even a goodnight kiss. However, these innocent acts are often misconstrued as sexual or homosexual in nature. This isn't about sexuality, it's about the purity of friendship. Nowadays, it seems our society has reached an unspoken agreement to sexualize every form of human contact, which has a detrimental effect on platonic relations. The American Sociological Association suggests that Americans are suffering from a dearth of friends (McPherson, Smith-Lovin & Brashears, 2006). This research indicates a possible correlation with how our society sexualizes friendship. Human contact does not necessarily imply romantic or sexual feelings, which means we should not shy away from expressing affection towards our friends, also referred to colloquially as "the homies". Platonic intimacy needs to be normalized and stripped of any sexual or homosexual overtones unless they are intended. This petition seeks to rally public support in breaking down this societal stereotype that has undoubtedly strained many friendships over time. Let's together recognize and celebrate healthy, platonic affection between friends - regardless of gender - in all forms. Let's create a more compassionate and understanding society. Sign this petition to help create awareness and make a difference.
