Folks it’s been a tough couple of weeks for us here at NOPE.
Let me break it down for you all
We started out with an exciting submission to the NS provincial government from Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society showing in great detail they have found 26 rare species inside the proposed Archibald Lake Wilderness Area. Subsequent media coverage shows Environment Minister Tim Halman saying the “department is not looking at Archibald Lake right now. My department is very much driven by science and data and that’s how we make our decisions as a regulatory department.” I say science here could not be clearer Minster Halman, stop speaking out of both sides of your mouth and get this protected! A reminder too, our MLA Greg Morrow told folks during the election that he would work to get AL protected. Where is this work, Greg?
Second. Tim Houston’s government approved Signal Gold’s project in Goldboro for two open pit mines. This project will now officially enter the environmental approval process with three other giant proposed open pit gold mines in the area. Its important to point out that there are now 6 giant open pit gold mines either in production or in the permitting process all within a 100 km span along the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia.
Thirdly and just out today, St. Barbara’s project in Moose River was approved by Tim Houston’s government allowing them to extend the walls upward of their very large tailings impoundment facility which allows the company to continue production. This expansion was also needed for their Beaver dam open pit gold mine, Fifteen Mile Stream open pit gold mine and their Cochrane Hill open pit gold mine projects to move foreword.
Tim Houston you and your government clearly do not have the best interest of the environment along the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia in mind. These are not resources we as Nova Scotian’s are willing to sacrifice over the well being of our natural environment.
Looks like you are in for a fight sir!
This government needs to hear from folks and the only way letters work is if they are written from your own words and from the heart. Please take a little bit of your summer and write a letter regarding Archibald Lake protection and this governments poor decision to expand gold mining to epic proportions along a 100 km stretch of the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia.
