Concerned citizens have invited experts to talk and answer questions from independent experts in public health, hydrogeology, and biology on potential community impacts of the gold mine in our community. Please join us on August 19th, 2019 6 to 9 pm at the Lions Hall in Sherbrooke.
Dr. Kevin Spencer – Dr. Spencer is an Emergency Medicine Physician, Mechanical Engineer, Assistant Professor in Medicine with Dalhousie University, and Entrepreneur with two start-up companies in the Halifax area. The St. Mary’s River in Guysborough County has been a very important natural resource enjoyed by 4 generations of Dr. Spencer’s family. They have had a seasonal residence on the river just downstream from Cochrane Hill for many years.
Dr. Spencer will walk you through a series of concerns he has on the proposed gold mine. The questions provide a template for the community with respect to what questions the citizens might want to get answered for the mine. His blog piece on the subject may be found at https://thegoldmineconversation.wordpress.com under the Enter blog tab, “Dr. Kevin Spencer”.
Dr. Peter Lund – Retired hydrogeologist with over 30 years experience in private consulting as a Professional Geoscientist specializing in assessment and remediation of industrial and commercial contaminated sites, municipal groundwater supply development, surface water impact studies, landfill assessment, and mine closures. He is most noted for his work on the acid mine drainage issue and subsequent fish kill at the Halifax International Airport and his work on the former Devco mine site clean-up.
Mr. Lund will speak on acid mine drainage and the role sulphides play in the creation of acid mine drainage, the impact of crack halos created from blasting in the mine pit, and the consequence of the storage of waste rock and low-grade ore on the surface.

He has been involved in numerous environmental assessments and monitoring projects St. Mary’s River Association, DFO, and NS Inland Fisheries, and co-wrote the recovery strategy for the St. Mary’s River. He has taught ecology, physiology, and biological diversity at St. Francis Xavier University. Mr. Hunter will articulate the importance of the St. Mary's River in the overall recovery strategy for the Atlantic salmon population and the potential concerns he has on the impact of the proposed project not only for the Atlantic salmon population but also on the groundwater and surface water resources in the St. Mary’s River Watershed and ecosystem.
