Keep the Commuter Lounge Open

The Issue

Commuters at Saint Joseph's University have always felt like second class citizens compared to the rest of the student population who reside on campus. Since the recent layoffs have occurred, Mary Beth was among those who were fired. She was in charge of the commuter lounge that gave commuters a place to meet fellow peers as well as a location to hang out. It was a designated area given to students who had swipe access only. Over the next few days, commuters are being asked to relocate to the 3rd floor of Campion but they were never consulted for this decision. Why is this happening at all? The reason that's being given to the students is that there is no one "supervising" the students. Beth, and her colleagues, believe that college students should be constantly watched but if that were true then many other spaces on campus should have a "supervisor." Why should the commuters lose this area because of a reason as simple as this. It is not only a waste of money but a waste of good resources, especially since it was beautifully renovated over the last year. Lastly, SJU's mission is to build a community and protect their students but shutting it down does not adhere to the University's very own core ideology. This will not only impact the current student population but for those who will apply to the University believing that OUR school cares about commuters. If we truly do care, then the first step is to show support that commuters should be treated with respect and have a space on campus that they can stay in. The goal over the course of the next few weeks, and maybe months is to bring back the lounge. The second step is to show that commuters are just as much equal to their peers who live on campus. Please sign this petition to show your support not only to the current commuters, but to all who will apply in the near future.
