Shut Down Flight Schools operating at Hawthorne Municipal Airport!

Shut Down Flight Schools operating at Hawthorne Municipal Airport!
The Issue
THE CITY OF HAWTHORNE IS ROBBING ALL OF US OF OUR HEALTH AND RIGHT TO FEEL PEACE IN OUR HOMES, BACKYARDS, PARKS, SCHOOLS, GOLF COURSES, AND CHURCHES! ⛪️
According to National Geographic, Noise Pollution impacts millions of people on a daily basis. The most common health problem it causes is Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL). Watch these videos regarding the negative impact of noise pollution on our health.

Exposure to loud noise can also cause high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep disturbances, and stress. These health problems can affect all age groups, especially children. Many children who live near noisy airports or streets have been found to suffer from stress and other problems, such as impairments in memory, attention level, and reading skill. Refer to National Geographics' article Noise Pollution (https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/noise-pollution for additional information.
According to the 2020-2021 School Accountability Report Card (https://www.hawthorne.k12.ca.us/sarc of all the elementary and middle schools in Hawthorne and Lawndale School District, Zela Davis Elementary School is the most impacted. The school is less than a mile away from the Hawthorne Municipal Airport. Zela Davis Elementary School has the highest absenteeism rate and the lowest academic performance. Next year will be the 100th anniversary of when Miss Zela Davis began teaching in the city of Hawthorne. I strongly feel that she would be appalled by the lack of regard the city has towards the children that are supposed to be educated and protected at her school. This is the link to the school's SARC: http://hsd-ca.schoolloop.com/file/1531973529934/1298973906433/6345005370742462467.pdf
PIONEERS AND HEROES – Daily Breeze
Zela Davis Elementary School, Hawthorne: Davis started teaching in the Hawthorne School District in 1923. Four years later, she became the first female principal when she took over Williams School (later consolidated with Davis Elementary). She retired in 1964. Less than a year later, the district named the school after her. She died in 1984 in Torrance.

Private planes operating out of the private flight schools at Hawthorne Municipal Airport are breaking the law by flying circles over thousands of people under a 1,000 feet of altitude and its effects are detrimental to every aspect of our lives. According to the FAA (https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-14/chapter-I/subchapter-G/part-121/subpart-U/section-121.657

Illegally flying under 1,000 feet of altitude has now become the norm. I took these screenshots on 10/04/2022 between the hours of 1:11 PM through 4:33 PM. As you can see, the private airplanes fly over many schools, parks, churches, restaurants, libraries, fire department station, small businesses, golf course, and thousands of homes.

Jesus was quoted many times in the Bible saying “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.” Our right to hear is being threatened.
Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is a serious and costly medical issue. We as taxpayers will be paying for hearing aids and other medical treatments associated with noise pollution exposure. According to the SARC, 93.7% of the students at Zela Davis Elementary School are Socioeconomically Disadvantaged; therefore, they are more likely to have Medi-Cal insurance which is paid by the state and not private insurance. According to NoiseBan.com, we should be exposed to airplane noise, 110 dB, no more than ONE minute a day! Imagine the impact those planes are having on the entire community.

According to the Hawthorne Municipal Airport Noise Study, the air traffic is going to significantly increase by 2025 and over 90% of the flight operations occur during the day, during school and business hours. Refer to the https://hawthornenoise.airportstudy.net/ for details.

This issue boils down to this...THE HOBBY OF THE AFFLUENT AND RICH IS MAKING THE CITIZENS OF HAWTHORNE SICK AND IMPOVERISHED. Learning how to fly a small airplane is a hobby, it's a non-essential activity that negatively impacts the entire community.
The Noise Pollution will cause our property values to decrease. Out of necessity, I wear noise cancelling headphones while inside my home. If I close the windows, my home is stifling hot (80 degrees and up) because we don’t have central air conditioning. We were quoted $20,000 by three different HVAC companies. Let’s also consider all of the small businesses in our cities. Our businesses will not flourish as people will prefer to visit the restaurants of cities that provide a relaxing ambience. Our citizens will be spending their hard-earned money on medical expenses, hearing aids, and mental health services. These medical expenses will also be paid by Medi-Cal and Medicare which put a burden on everyone who pays taxes. Most importantly, our children (OUR FUTURE) will not thrive in school and will turn to drugs and gangs. Poor academic performance is linked to ADHD, depression, anxiety and conduct disorders. Children with these mental health conditions are more likely to not attend college or vocational schools, and are more prone to end up incarcerated.
It's time we reclaim our air space and our right to live in peace. I implore you to take action and contact Hawthorne’s elected officials.
Mayor Alex Vargas has a master’s degree in physics so he should understand how noise pollution impacts all living organisms. (https://www.cityofhawthorne.org/government/elected-officials/mayor-alex-vargas
Mayor Pro Tem L. David Patterson has over 17 years of experience as a Business Consultant and Investment Advisor with a background in Insurance, Investments, Taxes, and Commercial Real Estate. He should be concerned how the noise pollution affects Hawthorne’s real estate market and small businesses. https://www.cityofhawthorne.org/government/elected-officials/mayor-pro-tem-david-patterson
Council Member Olivia Valentine represented the FAA as a prosecutor in many enforcement cases, based on alleged violation of the Federal Aviation Regulations by pilots, air carriers, airports, and maintenance personnel. She knows the law and it's time that she defends our citizens against the pilots that are operating the flight schools at OUR Hawthorne Municipal Airport. https://www.cityofhawthorne.org/government/elected-officials/council-member-olivia-valentine
For the past twenty-five years, Council Member Alex Monteiro has consistently worked with schools, social service agencies and community groups in assuring that underprivileged children and families receive adequate physical and mental health services, and support structures that positively affect their well-being. He should be invested in giving our schools an environment that is free from unnecessary noise pollution. https://www.cityofhawthorne.org/government/elected-officials/council-member-alex-monteiro
According to Council Member Angie Reyes English, she has worked tirelessly to strengthen neighborhood safety, create quality local jobs and improve the health and welfare of local families. Let’s inform her of this current public health crisis in our schools, and champion her to vote to close the private flight schools operating at OUR airport. https://www.cityofhawthorne.org/government/elected-officials/council-member-angie-reyes-english
Your attention on this issue will be greatly appreciated. I implore you to sign and share this petition with everyone you know (neighbors, family, friends, teachers, city council members, restaurant owners, etc.). Thank you. :)
